This study found that Yuri glacier, a northern BC glacier near Big Mountain, in the unseated territories of the Tāłtān Konelīne and Dënéndeh Peoples, and at 56.964444 North and 130.705278 West, is in retreat. By studying images from Google earth and Sentinel playground it was found that the glacier has been retreating at an average rate of 9.8m/year over the period of 1984 to 2022 a significant increase compared to the retreat since the Little Ice Age since when Yuri glacier has retreated by 1039.3 meters or an average of approximately 6m/yr. Using Pelto’s ratio of 1/3rd glacial area taken up by accumulation zone, it is clear that Yuri will continue to retreat. Given Yuri glaciers northern latitude, it is deeply concerning that it is shrinking so quickly as to be gone entirely by 2238.
